Your Memories
The Play Area
In the 20's and 30's tennis courts, a paddling pool and recreation ground were created in Thurcroft, these were next to the church, I remember them as a child, the tennis court was surrounded by a metal fence as was the swings, slide etc. in the play area, the play area had a caretaker who used to unlock it each morning and lock up again at night, I remember the paddling pool, but it had been filled in with sand by the time I was old enough to play there, it had a central concrete round block, and we used to play king of the castle on it.
Eventually the fences came down and the tennis courts and play area became run down and vandalised, there was a drinking fountain in a brick wall near to the church, I as a child always thought that they christened babies in it!
Everything in those days had railings or fences round and looked all neat and tidy, the railings were removed from around the church, that area now looks run down, and yet again part of the church grounds are being used to build more new houses on, when will they stop putting houses on every little patch of spare ground
