Harry Kennen's Shop in Thurcroft

I have just visited the website and was pleased to see the reference to the shop where I was born in 1945.

Harry Kennen was my grandfather.

Kennen’s was the first shop in the village and every conceivable type of merchandise was stocked from groceries to pit tools.

Daisy Kennen

My mother, Daisy, pictured here, standing outside the shop. She ran the shop until 1956.

Daisy married George Yeardley from Whiston in 1937 and the shop was renamed Yeardley’s.

My grandfather Harry, was a keen pig keeper as the picture shows

Before opening the shop my grandparents kept the lodging house for the navvies who were sinking the pit and were later prominent in the establishment of Thurcroft church.

Shop window decorated for a jubilee or Coronation.

Harry Kennen was the son of George Kennen of Wickersley and his wife Bessie (Nee Jackson)

told by John Yeardley March 2008
