Foster of Doncaster, Brampton-en-le-Morthen and Newhall Grange

John Foster acquired the lease of Newhall Grange in 1851. By 1871 he was residing there with his family.

It appears that the Fosters were at some stage (about 1796) of Brampton-en-le-Morthen, and before that had connections to the Manor of Arksey, Doncaster, Yorkshire, as references from Crewe Mumiments show:

Thomas Foster of Bentley, par Arksey, Yorks., yeoman to Thomas Bailey of Adwick le Street, Yorks., yeoman, and Thomas Ingland of Boulton, Yorks., tanner. On the marriage of Thomas Foster and Anne Bingley, of Boulton, spinster, daughter of Godfrey Bingley, yeoman, dec'd.
Messuage, with cottage adjoining; orchard or little garth adj., 3r: 1 close land in Bentley, known as Speight Close; together with all other lands belonging to Thomas Foster, in Arksey.
To Bailey and Ingland, to be held to the use of Thomas Foster and other specified uses.
For £80, the marriage portion to be given to Foster.
Enclosure: memorial that indentures were enrolled at Wakefield.

His dwelling house, with appurtenances, in Bentley, to his son John. All other lands in Bentley, or else where in Yorkshire, to his wife Ann for life, thereafter, to his son Thomas. All household furnishings, china and linen to his wife Ann, for life, thereafter to his son Thomas. A legacy of £20 to his son Thomas. His wife Ann is to assist Thomas in managing his farm at Bentley with free board and lodging. If she should ever leave, Thomas is to pay her an annuity of £25 the residue of his goods; and chattels to his son Thomas.

To secure £300 principal, plus interest. 13th March 1795.
Endorsements: receipt for the £300 principal and note of further borrowing on the same security, whereby Foster borrowed a further £100.

Reciting an indenture of mortgage of 13th March 1795, and an endorsement of 17th March, on which default was made. Jackson thus assigns the mortgage to Leggat. For £400 principal, interest having been paid to date

Thomas Foster of Arksey in the parish of Bentley cum Arksey, Yorks, died 1811. His will dated 18 Jan 1811:

All debts and expenses to be paid out of his personal estate. The residue to his wife Margaret. His real estate to his brother John Foster; his friend Joshua Hepworth of Rogerthorpe, co. Yorks. gent, on trust for sale, the money thus arising to be used as personal estate and disposed of as specified.
Residue of the money to be invested in government stocks, dividends of these to be paid to his wife Margaret. In the meantime, the lands were to be held to specified uses, on specified trusts. Various legacies bequeathed (specified).

Parcel of land in Broad Axe field, Bentley, in Arksey, Yorks, 1r 20p bounded by the Turnpike Road from Doncaster to York (east), by the Roman Road (west) and by lands of Sir W. B. Cooke (north and south): parcel of land in Amersall field, Bentley, 1r 3p, bounded by lands of Sir W. B. Cooke (east, north & south) and by the Doncaster - York turnpike (west).
Reciting also the will of Joseph Foster (19th January 1788), and that of Thomas Foster (18th January 1811).
Reciting also that the surviving trustees under the will of Thomas Foster, viz; Joshua Hepworth. Joseph Addey & John Pearson, under the terms of the will, sold Foster's lands by public auction.
John Hall was the buyer of the above mentioned lands, in which a term of 500 years was vested for £56 (the term of years to merge in the freehold). Lastly reciting that the title deeds concerned with the above named lands were in the hands of Charles Ellis, but that he agreed to produce them whenever required.

Richard Birks of Ardsley, in the parish of Darfield, Yorks, gent: Joshua Hepworth of Rogerthorpe, in the parish of Badsworth, Yorks, gent: John Foster of Lingodell in the parish of St. John, Yorks, gent: Sir William Bryan Cooke of Wheatley in the parish of Doncaster, bart: Frederick Fisher of Doncaster, Yorks, gent.
Several parcels of land lying in Almholme; including Rawsons Close, 2a 1r 2p: several parcels of enclosed land in Almholme field (acreages given): several parcels of land in Shaftholme field (acreages given); several parcels of ground lying in Woodfield (acreages): several parcels of land in the Masterfield (acreages): several parcels in Arksey Ings (acreages). Reciting that by indenture of 1st Oct. 1806 the above lands were mortgaged by Thos. Foster for £2,000. By his will (18th Jan. 1811) he devised that the lands were to be put upon trust for sale, but until sold, were to the use of his nephew John Foster for 500 years. By an indenture of 11th June 1825, the term of years on the lands was assigned to John Foster and Joseph Hepworth, in trust to attend the inheritance. By lease and release of even date with this indenture, the lands were assigned by Joseph Hepworth to Sir William Bryan Cooke for £3,772. By this indenture, Richard Birks (acting on behalf of Sir W. B. Cooke and other interested parties) assigns the term of years to Fisher, in trust to attend the inheritance.

Joseph Foster of Highgreen, in the parish of Ecclesfield, Yorks, gent: Joshua Hepworth of Rogerthorpe in the parish of Badsworth, Yorks, gent: John Foster of Lingodell, in the parish of St. John, Yorks, gent: Sir William Bryan Cooke of Wheatley in the parish of Doncaster, Yorks, bart: Nathan Workman of Almholme, in the parish of Arksey, Yorks, farmer: John Bullas of Doncaster, Yorks, butcher: Frederick Fisher of Doncaster, Yorks, gent.
1r in Almholme Field, in a furlong there called Souekster Leys; 2r arable in Arksey Wood Field, near a balk there: close called 'small mean holme' 1½a. All lands within the parish of Arksey.
Reciting that, by various indentures, ie. 30th May 1748, of mortgage, of assignment of 4th August 1789, of lease and release of 18th & 19th March, 1801, the lands became vested in Thomas Wrightson who died in 1820, intestate, with a residue of the term of 500 yrs still remaining. The lands were thus put up for sale by public auction by Sir William Bryan Cooke, Nathan Workman and John Bullas. All parties agree that the residue of the term of years be vested in Frederick Fisher, in trust to attend the inheritance of the purchasers. To be held to specified uses.

Joshua Hepworth of Rogerthorpe, Yorks, gent: John Foster of Lingodell, in the parish of St. John, Yorks, gent: Wootton Byrchinshaw Thomas of Chesterfield, Derbys., a trustee appointed on behalf of Thomas Foster: Sir Wm. Bryan Cooke of Wheatley, Doncaster, Yorks, bart: George Parker of Streethorpe, Yorks, Esq. In accordance with the terms of the will of Thomas Foster, dated 18th January, 1811, the trustees Joshua Hepworth and John Foster (nephew of Thos. who succeeded his father John as trustee), have agreed to sell Thomas Foster's lands to Sir William Bryan Cooke. Wooton Byrchinshaw Thomas, in agreement with John Foster agrees to convey certain lands in Arksey (mentioned fifthly in the list of lands). Lands are in Bentley, Arksey, Almholme, and, are listed as 5 separate conveyances, with acreages, tenants, field names and boundaries given.
To be held to the use of Sir W.B. Cooke for life: then to the use of George Parker his heirs and assigns in trust for Sir W.B. Cooke to bar any dower claim from the wife of W.B. Cooke. After his death, to the use of his heir and assigns for ever. For £3,772.
