Captain Thomas Butler

Captain Thomas Butler was born about 1769, the brother of the Earl of Lanesborough- described as of Thurcroft Hall and Barberwood, was at Thurcroft in 1817. He died in August, 1847 at Brightside Bank, Sheffield, aged 78. Recorded in his obituary in the Gentleman's Magazine - 'he was a midshipman on the Warrior, of 64 guns, on the 12th April, 1782, in the memorable victory of Lord Rodney over Count de Grasse, in the West Indies, and afterwards distinguished himself as a navigator in the Indian and Pacific Oceans and Chinese Seas. His tracks are marked in the modern globes.

Thomas Butler married the daughter of Joseph Priestley Esq. of White Windows near Halifax. She died age 24 in September 1813.
