Brookhouse to Roche Abbey

The following photo's depict the route taken, in 1864, by John Cooper on the night of his murder, he travelled from Handsworth, Sheffield, eventually arriving in Laughton-en-le-Morthen, from then onto Brookhouse, where he stopped at Mottram's beer house for a glass of ale; after leaving Mottrams he went through Slade Hooton and onto Abbey Lane, this lane would have taken him onto Gypsy Lane, past Roche Abbey and on to his home in Stone, Maltby.

Abbey Lane is still today a very quiet and remote place without any street lighting, so on the night of Coopers' murder in 1864 it would have been pitch black. Somewhere between Abbey Lane and Roche Abbey, John Cooper met his death, his visit to Mottrams beer house sealing his fate.
