Improvements in Land Drainage
In 1849 the Times newspaper published a Notice detailing improvements in Land Drainage in the area:

HATFIELD'S
DRAINAGE, FARM BUILDINGS, & COTTAGE IMPROVEMENTS.
NOTICE is hereby GIVEN, that, under the powers of " The General Land Drainage and Improvement Company's Act, 1849," a Provisional Contract has been entered into between CHRISTIANA HATFIELD, of Skellow Grange, Doncaster, in the county of York, widow, and the said company for the Improvement of certain Lands, situate in the Parishes Laughton-en-le-Morthen, Bramley, Brampton, St. John's, Todwick, Sheffield, and Handsworth, in the County of York; and in the Parish of Norton, in the County of Derby; by the execution of Drainage Works, and the Erection of Farm Buildings, and Labourers' Cottages, as mentioned in the said Contract.
And NOTICE is hereby FURTHER GIVEN, that application is about to be made by the said Company to the Inclosure Commissioners for England and Wales for a Provisional Order, under the powers and provisions of the said Company's Act declaring that it is right and proper, and for the benefit of the parties having any Estate or Interest in the Lands so proposed to be improved, that the Moneys paid and to be paid for the execution of such Improvements, and for the costs, charges, and expenses properly incurred preparatory to, for, or in relation to, and consequent on the Contract respectively, or such part of the Moneys as the said Commissioners may think reasonable, shall be charged on the Inheritance of the said Lands, or of some sufficient part thereof.
